SERENGETI
WEATHER & SEASONS
Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, making it one of the best destinations in Africa for a wildlife safari in any season.
The region has two main seasons — the dry season and the rainy (green) season.
Each offers a slightly different safari experience, from dramatic wildlife encounters during the dry months to lush landscapes and newborn animals during the green season.

Dry Season (June – October)
The dry season is widely considered one of the best times to visit the Serengeti for wildlife viewing.
During these months, grass becomes shorter and animals gather around rivers and water sources, making them easier to spot.
Highlights of the dry season include:
-
excellent wildlife visibility
-
large concentrations of animals
-
cooler and comfortable temperatures
-
ideal conditions for photography and game drives
This period also coincides with the Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, when thousands of wildebeest attempt to cross the Mara River — one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Africa.
Green Season / Rainy Season (November – May)
The rainy season, often called the green season, transforms the Serengeti into a lush and vibrant landscape. Although there are occasional rains, they are usually short and followed by sunshine.
Wildlife viewing remains excellent, and the scenery becomes especially beautiful during this time.
Advantages of the green season include:
-
fewer tourists and quieter safari experiences
-
lush green landscapes and dramatic skies
-
excellent birdwatching with many migratory species
-
the Great Migration calving season in the southern Serengeti from January to March
Many photographers prefer this time of year because the landscape is more colorful and the light conditions can be spectacular.
Serengeti climate overview
Temperatures in the Serengeti remain fairly consistent throughout the year.
Typical conditions include:
-
Daytime temperatures: 25–30°C (77–86°F)
-
Cool mornings and evenings, especially during early game drives
-
Occasional rainfall during the green season
Because the climate is mild and wildlife is present year-round, the Serengeti offers incredible safari experiences in every season.
